51 <br />Natural Resources Goals and Policies <br />Goals: <br />1.Ensure all development respects the natural aesthetics and environment of Little Canada. <br />2.Increase overall health and quality of natural resources in Little Canada. <br />3.Develop and foster relationships with environmental groups and other government agencies. <br />4.Collaborate with adjacent cities and townships regarding development of land adjacent to Little Canada. <br />Policies: <br />1.Enforce federal and state regulations for development on wetlands and in floodplains. <br />2.Minimize development impacts to sensitive resources and minimize site alterations. <br />3.Continue to minimize stormwater runoff and mitigate its negative impacts on water quality. <br />4.Explore options to increase use of native plantings in development plans. <br />5.Protect current areas identified as ecologically significant. <br />6.Increase urban tree canopy and health of boulevard trees. <br />7.Increase public knowledge on importance of quality and health of natural resources. <br />8.Increase collaboration with the City’s watershed district, the County, and the City’s conservation district. <br />Implementation Actions <br />1.Adopt and implement the updated Surface Water Management Plan which includes measure to control <br />erosion and to protect natural drainage ways. <br />2.Meet with the watershed district to identify future projects to increase water quality and health in Little <br />Canada. <br />3.Perform a study and inventory on urban trees in Little Canada to inform a future tree preservation and <br />protection ordinance. <br />4.Develop educational materials for dissemination to the public to increase private stewardship. <br />5.Work with environmental groups including the watershed and conservation district to define and identify <br />ecologically significant areas in the City to inform future conservation policies. <br />6.Protect the City’s access to solar energy and overall energy resilience through analysis of current code.
