1

Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office
Contract Cities Update

Auto Thefts – January 2022

Auto thefts continue to be a significant issue throughout
Ramsey County in 2022
In January 2022, 26 motor vehicles were reported stolen
to the Sheriff’s Office which is an increase of 29% over
2021 monthly averages. The accompanying heat maps
show the locations, density, time of day and day of week
for January auto thefts in all of Ramsey County. The
warmer colors indicate the highest concentrations of
vehicle thefts in terms of location, day of week and time.
*Reporting Agency data included in the Heat Maps
represent all Ramsey County Police Agencies except
Saint Paul
To combat the significant rise in auto theft, the Ramsey
County Attorney’s office has partnered with the Ramsey
County Sheriff’s Office in 2021 to form the Ramsey
County Youth Auto Theft Intervention Project. As part of
this effort Sheriff Fletcher created the Carjacking and
Auto Theft Unit in September 2021 utilizing grant funding.
The Ramsey County Youth Auto Theft Intervention
Project is taking the approach used in Group Violence
Intervention, also known as focused deterrence. The idea
is that a relatively small number of people are involved in
violence, and that stopping them can lead to increased
safety for the individuals involved and the community as
a whole.
CAT team investigators, working tirelessly throughout
Ramsey County, arrested 50 juveniles and 12 adults for
auto theft or carjacking between September 2021 and
January 18, 2022. The Sheriff’s Office recovered 112
stolen vehicles during that time.
What can YOU do?
Vehicle thefts are largely a crime of opportunity and there are steps you can take to avoid becoming a victim:
• DO lock your vehicles at all times
• Remove all valuables from your vehicle
o This includes other vehicle keys, key FOB’s and remote garage door openers auto thieves can use to
easily steal other vehicles or property
• DO NOT leave running vehicles unattended, even for short periods of time
o Auto thieves are on the lookout for this behavior and will take advantage of it whenever possible
• Report Suspicious Activity to the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible!
