WORKSHOP MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 13, 2022
DISCUSS POTENTIAL GRANT APPLICATIONS FOR LITTLE CANADA ROAD
IMPROVEMENTS AND COUNTRY DRIVE REALIGNMENT
The Public Works Director explained that the area near the Little Canada Road and I-35E
interchange operates poorly for both motorists and pedestrians, and the proximity of Country
Drive to the interchange also presents unique traffic challenges. He reported that the City started
a conversation with the City Engineer and asked for preliminary concept plans for a redesign of
Little Canada Road and Country Drive intersection. He stated that city and engineering staff
have been collaborating about possible infrastructure enhancements, and Ramsey County and
MNDOT staff have been part of these early conversations, and have shown a willingness to
support the City if the City decides to lead a project. He noted that this area does not have the
same priority for MNDOT and Ramsey County as it does for the City.
Eric Seaburg, City Engineer, stated that MNDOT has new signals budgeted for the Little Canada
Road and Country Drive intersection budgeted in a few years, but nothing else. He explained
that he has been looking at options for funding and have identified two potential improvements
that may qualify for potential State and Federal grant funding. Beth Engum, Engineer with
Bolton & Menk, explained that this area has a higher than average crash rate, and there are
funding opportunities that specifically look for projects that would reduce crashes.
There was Council consensus to further explore options to improve traffic in this area, and to
have Bolton & Menk work on designs and look for funding sources.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
Keis, Mayor
Attest:
a-4Q, Ll- -
ChristophJ Heinema ity Administrator
2
