ORDINANCE SUMMARY
CITY OF LITTLE CANADA ORDINANCE NO. 669
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 1101 OF THE LITTLE CANADA CITY CODE,
KNOWN AS THE MUNICIPAL CODE, RELATING TO DANGEROUS/POTENTIALLY
DANGEROUS DOGS
This is a summary of Ordinance 665, amending Chapter 1101 of the Little Canada City Code,
relating to the regulation of dangerous dogs and potentially dangerous dogs within the City.
Section 1101.010 is amended to add definitions for the terms "provocation" and "secure
enclosure."
Existing Sections 1101.170, 1101.180 and 1101.190 are deleted and replaced with new Sections
1101.170 and 1101.180. Section 1101.170 adopts and implement Minnesota Statutes, Sections
347.50 through 347.56 relating to the control and regulation of dangerous dogs and potentially
dangerous dogs. The new section gives the Animal Control Authority the duty, following an
incident or complaint, to determine whether a dog is dangerous or potentially dangerous.
Requirements for notice and hearing are set forth. The ordinance imposes restrictions and
regulations upon dogs found to be dangerous or potentially dangerous, including payment of an
annual registration fee, use of secure enclosures, microchipping, and posting of warning symbols
where the dog is kept.
Section 1101.170 also establishes procedures for review of a dangerous/potentially dangerous
designation, reclaiming any dog seized as dangerous, and seeking removal of any ban on dog
ownership imposed by the courts under Minn. Stat. § 347.542. The ordinance sets forth the
circumstances under which dangerous dogs must be confiscated, and under which circumstances
dogs must be desri•oyed.
Section 1101.180 provides new regulations concerning the quarantine of dogs and cats, and
destruction of rabid animals, consistent with the new Section 1101.170.
This summary was approved by the City Council of the City of Little Canada, Minnesota, on the
14`h day of January, 2009.
William Blesener, Mayor
ATTEST:
Joel Hanson, City Administrator
Ayes -
Nays -
