STAFF REPORT
TO:Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM:Bryce Shearen, CPRP, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Director
DATE:July 7, 2022
RE:Dugout Shade Covers at Pioneer Park
ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED:
A motion to recommend that the City accept the donation from the Little Canada Recreation
Association and install dugout shade covers at Pioneer Park.
BACKGROUND:
With many diseased ash trees scheduled for removal this summer at Pioneer Park near the
ballfields, the Pioneer Park Master Plan identified adding dugout shade structures to help with
maintaining some shaded areas for the ballfield users. Due to funding and priority levels, this
project was scheduled for 2025.
The Little Canada Recreation Association (LCRA) has made a generous donation to move this
project forward and be completed this summer. Dugout shade structures vary in size, materials,
and cost (ranging from $20,000 to $115,000). The proposed design utilizes a wood frame and
metal roof similar to the attached images. After much research by Recreation Coordinator, Don
Bowman, who has spent many years in softball parks, he felt this style would be a good fit for
Pioneer Park and provide shade at a reasonable cost. Mr. Bowman presented the idea to the
LCRA for a possible project they may consider funding and the group was in favor of donating
to the entire cost of the project.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the Parks & Recreation Commission recommend accepting the donation and
install the dugout shade covers at Pioneer Park.
BUDGETARY IMPACT
$20,000 donation from the LCRA to fund this entire project. No CIP funds will be needed for
this project.
ATTACHMENTS:
ï‚·Example Dugout Shade Structure Images
