STAFF REPORT
TO:Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM:Sierra Hietala, Recreation Coordinator
DATE:August 4, 2022
RE:Recreation Updates
ACTION REQUESTED
Informational Update. No action is requested.
BACKGROUND
Recreation Events Reflection:
-Ice Cream Social: This year’s Ice Cream Social was July 28 from 6-8 PM at the Spooner
Park Amphitheater. We had a magician, a musician, various yard games, an LCFD Fire
Truck, a balloon artist, an airbrush tattoo artist, a dunk tank, and more during the entirety
of the event. Thank you to the LCRA, LCFD, and Culver’s for sponsoring the Ice Cream
Social. Another thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who took the time to help
make this event a success! There was an estimated 700+ people in attendance.
-Movies in the Park: The City hosted the first Movies in the Park of the season featuring
Sing 2, on July 28 at approximately 9:15 PM (dusk) following the Ice Cream Social. This
free family-friendly movie was held in the ballfields behind Little Canada Elementary
School. Low-cost concessions were available to purchase before and during the movie.
There was an estimated 200+ people in attendance.
Upcoming Events and Activities:
-Movies in the Park: The City is hosting another Movies in the Park! Join us for The
Proposal on August 18 at approximately 8:45 PM (dusk) at the Spooner Park
Amphitheater. This light-hearted PG-13 comedy will be the perfect opportunity for a
night out. There will be a taco truck, and chocolate truck in attendance, and the LC
Concession Stand for all your snack needs!
-Farmers Market: The Little Canada Farmers Market takes place Mondays, June 6-
October 3, from 2-6 PM at 2920 Rice Street. Staff continues to hear many positive things
about the Market and the variety of vendors.
We accepted a new vendor to the Market- Cozy Crow, and we are expecting to have
Collova Farms in mid to late August. Cozy Crow sells baked goods like bread and
cookies, and also has jams and jellies. Collova Farms has a bountiful supply of produce.
As a reminder, the Farmers Market is accepting SNAP/EBT and WIC and is
implementing the Power of Produce, which is a youth-focused program for ages 4-12.
Each youth participant who signs up will receive a $2 token each time they visit the
market that can be used to purchase fresh fruits or vegetables from our vendors. Our goal
with the Power of Produce is to encourage family participation at the market and inspire
youth to make healthy food choices. Thank you to the LCRA who is sponsoring the
