STAFF REPORT
TO:Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM:Bryce Shearen, CPRP, Parks & Recreation/Community Services Director
Sierra Hietala, Recreation Coordinator
DATE:September 1, 2022
RE:Dog Park Site Furnishings
ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED:
A motion to recommend that dog park accessories for the dog park be added to the Capital
Improvement Plan (CIP) for up to $7,500.
BACKGROUND:
In 2017, the Demont hockey rink was converted to an off-leash dog area when it was not in use
during the warmer months. While there are still discussions about a year-round permanent dog
park, the hockey rink has been a great way to utilize a space that is not being used during the
warm months. The off-leash dog park continues to be used very frequently and staff has received
many positive comments about the off-leash dog park. While people enjoy the area, staff has also
received many comments about adding some site furnishings to enhance the dog park and invite
fun activities for pets.
Staff has researched many different types of outdoor dog park equipment and what style, texture,
size, etc. is appropriate for the location we currently have the dog park. Since the dog park is also
in the hockey rink, staff looked at portable equipment that could be stored in the winter months
and could be used in another location if the dog park was to ever be relocated. In researching
equipment and talking with other cities it was recommended to utilize a company that specializes
in making these products instead of trying to make them in-house. It was recommended to get
site furnishing made of HDPE and/or aluminum for corrosion resistance and with textured
coatings that provide a slip resistance surfacing for pets (except for the fire hydrant, staff will
work with Public Works to possibly repurpose an old fire hydrant).
After reviewing the costs of products, staff feels that $5,000-$7,500 would be an appropriate
amount to get some nice site furnishing to enhance the existing dog park and allow for some
good feedback from residents that could assist in the planning of a year-round dog park. There
would be some additional staff time needed to move the dog park equipment twice a year, but it
can be managed.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff feels these new amenities are in line with both the Parks & Recreation Mission Statement
and with the Strategic Plan of enhancing amenities in the park system and recommends the Parks
