MINUTES <br />Parks & Recreation Commission <br />February 5, 2009 <br />members for their support and good working relationships in establishing a very nice parks and trails <br />system within the city. <br />Sanders was asked if the Round Lake Park area homes could be condemned by the city. Sanders <br />indicated that that was a very expensive process and would probably not be considered an option. <br />Fahey stated she and Steinwall had attended the city's Goal Setting Session meeting on January 29"'. <br />The attendees defined short and long term goals for 2009 for the city. She commented that one of the <br />major goals and concerns was the "Streetscape Plan" for the city. This was described as striving to <br />improve the beauty of the city, whether it is with plantings at the parks or traffic improvements at <br />certain intersections. She also reported that Councilmember Montour suggested to have a flag pole <br />installed at Pioneer Park and Parks Maintenance Supervisor Anderson recommended extending the <br />irrigation system to the west side of Pioneer Park to assist with watering of the plantings. <br />Sullivan commented that if trees are planted they must be watered on a regular basis and bad soil is <br />also a determining factor in the survival of new flowers, shrubs and trees. She stated that maybe the <br />commission could recruit volunteer groups to assist with the planting or maintenance of plants in our <br />parks. <br />Lolmaugh commented on the Americorp Group. They organize groups to do community work. She <br />stated she would check into the organization more and report back to the group at the next meeting. <br />Slain asked if the commission was involved with setting the budget or the funding for park and trail <br />improvements. Sanders stated that Parks Director Morelan was aotively involved with the parks <br />section of the city budget. <br />Sanders stated that some cities have a Parks Foundation that assists with the funding of parks projects. <br />He will check on some of these and report his findings at the next meeting. Sullivan talked about the <br />Central Park Foundation in Roseville and said she would inquire more about their funding. <br />Steinwall suggested organizing a Garden Club which could assist with the planting and maintenance of <br />the plants in the parks. Sullivan stated she was a member of the Lake Owasso Garden Club and they <br />have a plant sale every year.
