POSITION DESCRIPTION <br />POSITION TITLE: Permit Technician DATE: 1998 <br />DEPARTMENT: Community and Economic Development REVISED: 2020, 2022 <br />ACCOUNTABLE TO: Support Services Manager DIVISION: Support Services <br />PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION <br />As front-line personnel, independently perform critical tasks related to customer service and construction <br />permitting; independently process permit applications; enter permit and inspection scheduling information <br />and generate reports; provide administrative support to the department and assist the public with the <br />permitting process. This position will have primary responsibility for administering the rental licensing <br />program. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS <br />Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers. <br />•Interacts with others in a manner that is professional and inspires open communication. <br />•Helps to create and maintain a respectful workplace culture and champions diversity and <br />inclusion. <br />•Participates in citywide training designed to strengthen competencies in areas such as <br />communications, leadership, decision-making and problem solving. <br />Receives applications and processes permits for building, fire and rental housing divisions using automated <br />permit system. <br />•Explain process to applicants and assist with completion of application. Answer all <br />applicable questions. <br />•Ensures applications and related documentation are complete and date stamped upon receipt. <br />•Determines appropriate permit type and enters data into permit system in an accurate and timely <br />fashion. <br />•Distributes applications to appropriate staff for plan review. <br />•Ensures appropriate fee information is entered in an accurate manner. <br />•Processes permits for issuance in an accurate and timely manner. <br />•Issues permits that do not require significant review and collect payment for permits. <br />•Perform data entry of permits. <br />Schedules inspections for building and fire permits issued and rental maintenance programs using automated <br />system with appropriate inspector(s) <br />•Confirms time and specific instructions for inspection. <br />Serves as primary or backup contact at the public service counter and on the telephone for general information <br />about planning, zoning and building matters. <br />•Provides concise, thorough and courteous oral and written information about permits and license <br />application requirements to the general public, contractors and developers. <br />Appendix E <br />58 of 63
