for yard waste is also significant, and may have played a role in the issues we experienced with
our haulers in June of 2022.

Although Little Canada has not officially taken any action related to No Mow May in the past,
formal action could certainly be taken if there was strong support from the City Council. If the
City Council would like to participate, city staff requests that Public Works and Parks staff be
allowed to determine which public properties should be maintained and which properties can be
left un-mowed for the month of May. As an example, the actively programed ball and soccer
fields must be mowed and maintained on a regular basis, and staff typically mows all manicured
areas in the city to maintain turf and reduce complaints.

RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that if Council chooses to participate in No Mow May, consider the following
options:

1. Allow participation in No Mow May with the following conditions:
a. City staff will determine if and where limited or no mowing might occur on city-
owned property
b. All properties must be in compliance no later than June 10 (City Code Chapter
601.030(f): all noxious weeds and grasses except ornamental varieties must not be
taller than 6 inches)
