<br /> <br />CITY OF LITTLE CANADA <br />COUNTY OF RAMSEY <br />STATE OF MINNESOTA <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />SUPPORTING THE RENAMING OF SAVAGE LAKE IN LITTLE CANADA <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Little Canada has received notice of a petition submitted to Ramsey County <br />to rename Savage Lake in Little Canada to Lake Metis; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, historical records indicate this lake was used by white fur traders and Indians as a <br />camp as early as the 1830’s and the traders chose to call this lake “Lake of the Savages”; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Little Canada City Council believes it has is an obligation to no longer use <br />a derogatory or offensive term for the name of a lake located in Little Canada; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Minnesota law allows a petition requesting to change the name of a lake or body of <br />water that is signed by at least 15 registered voters, be submitted to the county where the lake is <br />located; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, if Ramsey County approves the petition, it would then go to the Minnesota <br />Department of Natural Resources for consideration, and if approved, the request is sent to the <br />Federal Board of Geographic Names for final approval of the new name; and, <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Little Canada City Council supports the <br />renaming of Savage Lake and does not object to changing the name to “Lake Metis.” <br /> <br />Adopted by the Council this 23rd day of August 2023. <br /> <br /> ___________________________ <br /> Thomas Fischer, Mayor <br /> <br />Attest: <br /> <br /> <br />___________________________________ <br />Christopher Heineman, City Administrator
