Mayor & City Council
December 30, 1993
Page 2
Additional temporary parking was added to the east side of the park
in 1993. While this helped somewhat, the problem on the west side
persisted. The Centerville entrance to the park on the west side has
become the "main" entrance since the park was opened in 1992. Most
park users come to that entrance and fill it up before going to the
east parking lot.
After observing the use of the park for two complete seasons, it is
my recommendation that additional permanent parking be added to
Pioneer Park as soon as possible. This is necessary in order to
allow for more complete scheduling of the facility, while also
providing additional parking needed for the passive and non-scheduled
activity that occurs on a daily basis. In addition, I believe the
majority of this parking should be added to the Centerville Road area
as an addition to the present lot with an additional exit/entrance on
the north end of it.
This action will solve our immediate problem. However, additional
permanent parking will still be necessary off Desoto Street to
accommodate the proposed picnic shelter and other planned activity
areas when they develop.
Several times over the past two years, people have been reminded that
the need for additional parking in Pioneer Park was not an oversight,
but rather it was known since the early planning stages of the site.
As use increased, parking was to be increased. This has not
happened. Use has most certainly increased, but the necessary
parking areas have not.
I feel we can no longer wait for the possibility of additional
parking to be made available to us north of the park. It is time to
move forward in this matter so that the facility can be utilized to
its maximum potential.
JM:kv
cc: Parks and Recreation Commission
