Hanson
Listed below are several pros and cons to be presented at the Council
meeting:
Pros:
1. Installation of a sidewalk behind the curb would be for
pedestrian safety to prevent people from walking on the
street thereby reducing danger to pedestrians from vehicular
traffic.
2. The street can be made to a narrower dimension by
eliminating the walking or biking lanes on the edges
resulting in lower street installation costs and less
dollars to be expended annually for striping and
delineation.
Cons:
1. Could be very cost prohibitive if concrete sidewalks are
installed.
2. Is the City to maintain these sidewalks and plow them in the
winter for pedestrians? If we do that will be an added
maintenance task and with the
not believe keeping that walk
expectancies would be possibl
equipment Public Works has, a
be wide enough. A minimum of
would need to be installed.
equipment we have now, I do
cleared to the homeowners'
Due to the size of the
five foot sidewalk would not
six feet, preferably concrete,
3. Asphalt sidewalks tend to break up after several years and
are a high maintenance item.
4. The street at its present width with the addition of
sidewalks could negate the feasibility of the installation
due to the close proximity the sidewalk will then be to the
homes. -
These are just a few of the issues quickly put together for the Council
meeting. However, with more time and study, I am sure there could be more
Page 11
