Signage Elements
Less discussion was devoted to sign issues than the first two topics. However, i#.was
acknowledged that signs play an important role in the aesthetic impressions of the district.
It was generally agreed that signs should be regulated to avoid conflicts with the remainder
of the regulatory efforts, and that signs could even add to the character if constructed and
sited in appropriate locations.
The committee made the following comments regarding possible Signage elements:
• Sign locations should be consistent from building to building, and defined on a
project-wide basis.
• Sign number, size, and area, should be consistent throughout the project, granted
on a specific size per building bay.
• Potential sign locations would include an area at the top of the building's base,
small hanging or projecting signs over the sidewalk, and a limited amount of window
signs.
• Window signs should be limited to
hanging a printed sign in the window.
• Backlit plastic box signs are not in
prohibited.
• Temporary Signage should be allowed,
and only allowed in the recessed ;
Temporary signs such as sandwich be
painting or etching the glass, rather than
keeping with the district, and should be
but only if removed at the close of business,
ireas of the building fronts, if they exist.
ards should not be placed on the sidewalk,
street, or other public areas.
• Signs will be discussed more fully at the second workshop.
The workshop closed with a discussion of the next meeting's date, time, and agenda. It
was agreed that the meeting would be held after the Planning Commission's regular
business on November 9, 1995. The Planning Commission would begin its regular
meeting at 7:00 p.m., with the workshop to follow. The agenda would include a review of
photos and samples of projects from the Twin Cities area as suggested by the committee,
as well as other illustrations reflecting specific elements. The consultant would develop
a list of policies reflecting the discussion at this workshop, and the committee would
consider how each of the elements would be approached as to policy or ordinance.
The meeting was closed at 10:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
~%
Stephen Grittman
