Adopted May 8, 2024 <br />__________________________________ <br />Mayor Thomas Fischer <br />WHEREAS, In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day <br />and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week; and <br />WHEREAS, National Police Week was established by a joint resolution of the United States Congress <br />in 1962; and <br />WHEREAS, There are approximately 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities <br />across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office; and <br />WHEREAS, Everyday law enforcement officers are the first to be on the scene to help those in need <br />and are dedicated to serving the community; and <br />WHEREAS, National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost <br />their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others; and <br />WHEREAS, Over 43,000 assaults against law enforcement officers are reported each year, resulting <br />in approximately 15,000 injuries, and assaults against officers in Minnesota have increased by over 120% in <br />the last two years; and <br />WHEREAS, Since the first recorded death in 1786, over 23,000 law enforcement officers in the <br />United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty, including members of the <br />Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office; and <br />WHEREAS, The names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National <br />Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and <br />WHEREAS, In 2023, 136 officers were killed nationwide in the line of duty and their names will be <br />added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this spring; and <br />WHEREAS, The service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty will be honored during the <br />National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s Candlelight Vigil on May 13, 2024; and <br />WHEREAS, On May 15, 2024, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty will be <br />honored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and the Minnesota Law Enforcement <br />Memorial Association; and <br />WHEREAS, The service and sacrifice of Ramsey County suburban law enforcement officers killed in <br />the line of duty will be honored during the Ramsey County Suburban Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony <br />on May 16th, 2024; <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, The Little Canada City Council designates May 12 - 18, <br />2024 as Police Week in Ramsey County, and publicly salutes the service of law enforcement officers in our <br />community and in communities across the nation. <br />Proclamation
