M
minnesota department of health
717 s.e. delaware st. minneapolis 55440
September 245 197/6
Mr. Joseph G. Chlebeck, Clerk
City of Little Canada
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, Minnesota 55117
Dear Mr. Chlebeck:
This is in answer to your letter concerning a central water system for
the West.Wind Addition in the City of Little Canada. We will attempt
to answer your questions in the order in which they were listed.
1. We have no knowledge as to whether the city can or cannot require
a developer to install a central water system. We would suggest
that you discuss this with either your city attorney or with the
Minnesota League of Cities attorney.
2. The plans and specifications for a central water system to serve
66 lots would need'to be submitted to the Department of Health for
review and approval prior to construction. If the cost of the
project is $30,000 or more, the plans and specifications would have
to be prepared by an engineer registered in the state of Minnesota.
A permit for the appropriation of water would need to be obtained
from the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Waters.
3. The water for such a central water system must be treated, at a
minimum, to provide adequate fluoridation of the water. Chlorination
of all public water supply systems is strongly recommended. Depending
on the quality of the water from the well, iron removal treatment
may be desirable to provide water of satisfactory quality.
4. Based on our experience with similar systems throughout the metro-
politan area and in areas having similar geological formations, we
would not expect that the central water system would have any harmful
effects on the private domestic wells at homes in this area.
If you have any questions or if we can be of further service to you in
this matter, please let us know.
I O'
#'EP''i
1
PBJ/che I CITY OF,

an equal opportunity emplover
Yours- ery truly/
G ice•
Jo-iison , Chief
Section of Public Water Supplies
Clerk's exhibit no. 605
"fleeting 10-13-76
