♦..
3y`7
NEKZDN
Surrogate Family Livia.& - a normalized approach to rearing handicapped children
Number of Children to be Served - o
A&c range of Children to be Served - 5 to 10 years
Sex - Cirls and boys
Acceptance
.acceptance of a child into the home will he on an individual basis basically
determined by the potential of the child to grow and develop socially, emo-
tionally and intellectually in a family living environment.
Program
We believe that all persons regardless of handicapping conditions grow and
develop best in their own humus. When this isn't possible, for any or a wide
range of reasons, the child should have the opportunity to live in an environ-
ment as similar as possible to that of a normal family home.
The primary goal of Nekton is .o develop this environment and then to enrich
it with trained staff and elements of developmental resources, to assure
individual growth in the area,., of pelf -help skills, social skills, and
adaptation and intellectual functioning. This will he achieved through the
development of an individual pro!,yam plan for each, which specifies goals
and means of attaining such goals. The efforts of the staff in the home
will be coordinated with those of staff in programs, which each child will
participate in outside of the home. This type of programming and effort
will enable the maximization of each child's potential for growth and
development.
A primary asliect of individual -personal development is that of personality
__development. This will be a major emphasis of our program. We feel this
can he achieved through the surrogate family concept which emphasizes
interpersonal relationships between the houseparents and child over an
extended period of time.
All children who live in the home will attend appropriate education and
training programs in either public school or dac activity centers. Medical
and health needs will be met through community 11w ilities. The children
will utilize apprupriate community recreational resources. Our foal is to
make the children, individually and as a family unit, a part of the
community and not segregate them or -shelter them from it.
Clerk's exhibit no. 633
meeting 11-10-76 _
'.k
