STAFF REPORT
TO:Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM:Steven Anderson, Parks and Recreation Director
DATE:September 5, 2024
RE:Parks System Maintenance Update
ACTION REQUESTED
No action is requested. This report is informative only.
BACKGROUND
Thunderbay/Westwind Trail
Thunderbay Trail Connection is coming along nicely. Crews finished paving the trail and have
completed the pedestrian cross walk and RRFB at Vanderbie Street. Pedestrian ramps to trail,
Edgerton Street crosswalk, Edgerton Street RRFB and Vegetation Restoration remain.
Water Feature
Residents and visitors are advised that the popular water feature at Pioneer Park will be closing
for the season after Labor Day. The facility, which has been a summer favorite for families and
children, will wrap up its operations at the end of the day on September 2nd. As the weather
starts to cool down and the summer season comes to a close, the water feature will shut its
operation for maintenance and preparation for the upcoming off-season. The facility has offered
a refreshing retreat throughout the hot months. For those who will miss the water feature, local
parks and recreational facilities will continue to offer various activities and amenities throughout
the fall season.
Buckthorn and Invasive Species Removal
Goats will be working hard to remove buckthorn in Spooner Park in early September. In recent
years, an innovative and eco-friendly approach to managing invasive plant species has gained
traction: using goats for buckthorn removal. This method not only helps in controlling the spread
of the invasive buckthorn but also promotes sustainable land management.
