STAFF REPORT
TO:Mayor Fischer and Members of the City Council
FROM:Heidi Heller, City Clerk/HR Manager
Steve Anderson, Parks & Rec Director
DATE:July 24, 2024
RE:2024-2025 Youth Commissioner Appointments
ACTION REQUESTED
A motion to reappoint Youth Commissioners Alexis Lum and Ayanna Churcher to 1-year terms
from August 1, 2024 - July 31, 2025.
BACKGROUND
Youth Commissioner terms run for 1-year from August 1 – July 31 and Youth Commissioners can
serve up to three full terms. The terms of office for Youth Planning Commissioner Alexis Lum
and Youth Parks & Rec Commissioner Ayanna Churcher will expire on July 31, 2024.
The City has received requests for reappointment from Alexis (Ali) Lum and Ayanna Churcher.
Both are the first City of Little Canada youth commissioners and began serving on their
commissions in December 2022. Ali and Ayanna’s first term was a partial term, and they have
now served a full one-year term. Both have greatly enjoyed serving on the commissions and
requested to be reappointed. Staff recommends that both Ali and Ayanna be reappointed for 1-
year terms beginning on August 1, 2024. City Staff has enjoyed adding youth commissioners and
are excited to have Ali and Ayanna continue serving as commissioners.
Youth commissioners are eligible if they are age 18 or under and enrolled in high school. Ayanna
will be a senior so this is her last year of eligibility to serve as a youth commissioner. City staff
intends to do more outreach to the area high schools this coming year to encourage others to
apply.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends reappointing Alexis Lum to the Planning Commission and Ayanna Churcher to
the Parks & Recreation Commission for 1-years terms from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025.
