Welcome to Pioneer Park
Pioneer Park spans 33 acres and features flat, open terrain complemented by a pond
and a small wooded area. In the late 1980s, three truck farming families sold their
property for the development of Pioneer Park. Little Canada was seasonally home to
the Mdewakanton Dakota; during the warmer months, they chose this area due to the
abundant fishing and hunting resources. The French/Canadian settlers traded fur with
local indigenous people.
Present day, Pioneer Park's grand opening on October 17, 2023, celebrated the
creation of an all-inclusive playground at the park. The park holds four softball fields,
two tennis courts, a basketball court, soccer fields, bituminous trails, a children's play
area, a picnic shelter, and a water feature. The east-side picnic shelter near DeSoto
Street is available for reservation, accommodating up to 25 people for family picnics,
birthday parties, or similar gatherings; note that electricity is not provided at this shelter.
