The preliminary survey had a completion deadline of September 1, and staff utilized information
from the preliminary survey to create a secondary survey that went into greater detail on several
topics. The secondary survey was e-mailed to residents who completed the initial survey and
had a completion deadline of September 8.
The survey was marketed through several channels, including the City of Little Canada website,
multiple posts on social media, and in the city e-newsletter. Overall survey participation results
are outlined in Table 1 below.
Table 1: Survey Participation Results
Resident survey Number of respondents
Primary survey 113
Secondary survey 60
Throughout both the primary and secondary surveys, respondents could provide text feedback in
an “other comments” field to allow sharing of additional information for consideration.
PRIMARY SURVEY RESULTS
The purpose of the primary survey was to determine a baseline understanding of the community's
view on residential chickens/fowl. Based on those results, almost 78% of respondents strongly
support/support permitting residential chickens, with almost 22% strongly opposing/opposing.
Similarly, respondents were asked to provide feedback on fowl (ducks, geese, and turkeys).
Slightly over 60% of respondents strongly support/support permitting residential fowl, with almost
31% strongly opposing/opposing fowl.
Given the unique size and shape of many City of Little Canada residential lots, city staff
recommended gathering feedback regarding the location of residential chickens and/or fowl on
properties should they be allowed. Over 60% of respondents favored allowing residential
chickens/fowl (should they be permitted) on either the rear yard or side yard (depending on lot.)
Several respondents provided additional comments See Attachment A.
The final question on the primary survey provided an opportunity for respondents to give feedback
on the maximum number of residential chickens allowed should they be permitted. Options
included four, six, and 10. Almost 41% of respondents outlined 10 chickens as their preferred
maximum. However, 35 respondents provided feedback in other comments. The main themes
within the feedback received are outlined in Table 2 below. All comments have been provided in
the attachments.
