Letter Height:
The typical letter height for dynamic signs, including electronic message boards, variable message
signs, and other digital displays, is often determined by factors such as the viewing distance, speed
of passing traffic, and local regulations. While there is no universally fixed standard, several
guidelines and recommendations exist.
As a general rule of thumb, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in the United States
suggests a minimum letter height of 6 inches for dynamic signs used on roadways. However, the
FHWA also emphasizes the importance of considering the speed of traffic, font characteristics,
and the legibility requirements for the specific location.
For local roads and slower traffic, smaller letter heights may be acceptable, while higher-speed
roadways may require larger letters for optimal readability. The following are very general
guidelines:
6 inches: Typically suitable for local roads with lower speed limits and shorter viewing
distances.
8 to 12 inches: Commonly used for roadways with moderate speed limits and average
viewing distances.
12 inches or more: Recommended for high-speed highways and situations where signs
need to be visible from a significant distance.
Conclusion:
The proposed update to the Sign Code within the Zoning Code for dynamic signs reflects our
commitment to maintaining a forward-thinking and adaptable regulatory framework. This
initiative aims to enhance visual communication, keep pace with industry standards, and cater to
the evolving needs of our community.
Attachments:
Please see the existing Zoning Code Chapter 916, attached.
Public Hearing:
A Text Amendment requires a Public Hearing and the City Council will open the hearing at their
February 28, 2024 meeting to take comment from the public. A public hearing notice was sent to
the Pioneer Press for publication.
RECOMMENDED ACTION
To recommend approval of a Text Amendment to the Zoning Code Chapter 916 – Signs.
