MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
AUGUST 8, 2024

7

Commissioner Masrud agreed that it would be helpful to have more information on the potential
redevelopment being considered for those two commercial corridor areas.

Chair Johnson stated that if alcohol sales would not be restricted in those locations, she would
not see why cannabis would be treated differently. She recognized that there is still a stigma for
some around the use of cannabis, but it is a decision the City will need to make as to whether it
wants to welcome this type of business or push it to other communities. The City Administrator
agreed that will be the decision the City needs to make, whether it wants to welcome these
businesses or allow only as required.

Commissioner Masrud stated that perhaps it is more restrictive to start, only allowing in
industrial, to see how things go, and then they could open it up more in the future.
Commissioner Thorson agreed that it is easier to expand than contract.

Chair Johnson commented on the range of how a cannabis sales business can look and operate.
Commissioner Thorson commented that traffic would also need to be considered, as they would
perhaps not want to locate near another high-traffic generator, such as a coffee shop.

REPORTS FROM STAFF
The City Administrator announced that the new Community Development Director will be
starting on August 26th.

Chair Johnson thanked the existing staff members that have helped to cover the position until the
new staff member comes on board.

REPORTS FROM COMMISSIONERS
Commissioner Lum stated that she is thankful and happy that she was reappointed to the
Commission. She stated that although she does not often speak during the meetings, she is
learning a lot and it has been a blessing to be a part of the Commission.

Chair Johnson thanked Commissioner Lum for reapplying and being a part of the Commission.

ADJOURN
There being no further business, upon motion by Masrud, seconded by Thorson, the
meeting was adjourned at 7:07 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Amanda Staple
TimeSaver Off Site Secretarial, Inc.
