Little Canada
Fire Department, Inc. 325 Little Canada Road East
Little Canada, Minnesota 55117
Office: (651) 792-7680
Fax: (651) 766-7092

To: Mayor Fischer and Members of the City Council
Chris Heineman, City Administrator
From: Don Smiley, Fire Chief
Date: October 14, 2024
RE: Fire Station Vehicle Exhaust System

ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED:
Accept the low bid of $37,280.00 to Nordic Mechanical Services for the installation of a new
vehicle exhaust system at the fire station. Also accept the optional manual start up for the
makeup air system in the amount of $1,500.

To assist with the ventilation and air movement in the apparatus bay we would also like to
replace the 2 ceiling fans with new commercial grade ceiling fans. The fire department would
purchase these directly and have an electrician install them. The fans and installation would
be no more than $7,500.

Total cost of the project $46,280

BACKGROUND:
The vehicle exhaust system is the fire station apparatus bay was installed in 1991 when the
building was built. The system is undersized, and the technology is antiquated, also the
system currently does not work correctly. Firefighters have a 9 percent higher risk of being
diagnosed with cancer and a 14 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than the general
public.

The new vehicle exhaust system is a large piece of things we can do to help reduce firefighter
cancer.

SOURCE OF FUNDS: The vehicle exhaust system will be funded out of the fire equipment
fund. $206,000 was ear marked and approved for this project in the 2023 CIP Budget. The
bid for this project was well under the proposed cost.

We received 2 bids for the vehicle exhaust system itself:
Nordic Mechanical Services $ 38,780.00*
NAC Mechanical Services $ 48,108.00*
*These two bids do not include the new ceiling fans.
