MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 26, 1995
1995 is the Little Canada Fire Department~s 50th
Anniversary, and a committee has been established to
plan and coordinate some events commemorating this
anniversary. Preliminary plans include a dance to be
held the second weekend in September, as well as an
open house.
The Chief indicated that the warning light project is
just about ready to go, and should be installed within
the next couple of months. It appears that this
project will be substantially under budget.
The Chief noted that the Fire Department has a 10%
funding request for rescue apparatus. When it is
appropriate for the City to fund that capital
improvement, the Fire Department would be appreciative.
The Department views this as a valuable piece of life-
saving equipment.
The Chief updated the Council on pending legislation
affecting fire departments. One piece of legislation
addresses State Funding of relief associations, and
another may require emergency services to switch to 800
megahurst radio systems. Yet another bill would
require the installation of sprinkler systems in high-
rise buildings. The Chief reported that the State Fire
Marshall's office is working hard on special fire works
display issues. That office is pushing for legislation
which would require fire works display companies to be
licensed and reliable operators.
Some other new projects being considered include the
refurbishing of 742 to enclose the cab and bring the
apparatus up to today's safety standards. The Chief
indicated that he believes the Department has a good
handle on its 5-year capital improvement program, but
will continue to monitor and update this program.
The Chief informed the Council that 749 has been sold
for $30,000. This will net $17,000 to the City toward
reimbursement for the recent fire truck purchase, after
deductions for equipment that went with the truck,
repairs and commission to the seller. The Chief noted
that the Fire Department is responsible to reimburse
the City for the amount over $250,000 for the purchase
of the last fire truck. The Department is anticipating
that this reimbursement will be complete by the end of
the year.
The number of false alarms which occurred during 1994
was discussed, with the Chief indicating that this
number seemed to be consistent with other departments
experience. The procedures for responding to false
alarms were discussed, with the Chief informing the
2
