National Police Week <br />WHEREAS, In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers <br />Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week; and <br />WHEREAS, National Police Week was established by a joint resolution of the United States <br />Congress in 1962; and <br />WHEREAS, There are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities <br />across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office; and <br />WHEREAS, Everyday law enforcement officers are the first to be on the scene to help those in <br />need and are dedicated to serving the community; and <br />WHEREAS, National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have <br />lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others; and <br />WHEREAS, Over 56,000 assaults against law enforcement officers are reported each year, <br />resulting in approximately 17,000 injuries, and assaults against officers in Minnesota have increased by <br />over 160% in the last decade; and <br />WHEREAS, Since the first recorded death in 1786, approximately 27,000 law enforcement <br />officers in the United States have died in the line of duty, including members of the Ramsey County <br />Sheriff’s Office; and <br />WHEREAS, The names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the <br />National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and <br />WHEREAS, In 2024, 165 officers died nationwide in the line of duty and their names will be <br />added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this spring; and <br />WHEREAS, The service and sacrifice of all officers who died in the line of duty will be honored <br />during the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s Candlelight Vigil on May 13, 2025; and <br />WHEREAS, On May 15, 2025, the service and sacrifice of all officers who died in the line of duty <br />will be honored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and the Minnesota Law <br />Enforcement Memorial Association; and <br />WHEREAS, The service and sacrifice of Ramsey County suburban law enforcement officers who <br />died in the line of duty will be honored during the Ramsey County Suburban Law Enforcement <br />Memorial Ceremony on May 15th, 2025; Now, Therefore, Be It <br /> PROCLAIMED, The City of Little Canada City Council designates May 11 - 17, 2025 as Police <br />Week in Little Canada, Minnesota, and publicly salutes the service of law enforcement officers in our <br />community and in communities across the nation. <br />Proclamation
