STAFF
REPORT
TO:Mayor Fischer and Members of City Council
FROM:Bill Dircks, Public Works Director
Heidi Heller, City Clerk/HR Manager
DATE:May 28, 2025
RE:Public Works Maintenance I Position Posting
ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED:
Authorize posting of Public Works Maintenance I position.
BACKGROUND:
The Public Works Department currently has two employees out on long-term medical leave, and
another has just tendered his resignation in order to move out of state. Following June 6, there
will only be three full-time public works staff working. The normal count is five full-time staff
and possibility an Apprentice.
The two employees that are on leave will both be retiring in August and November this year.
Now that the department will be down a third person after June 6, staff feels it necessary to
replace the maintenance worker position immediately in order to be able to get routine
maintenance and duties done. Ideally somebody will be hired and start working by early-to-mid
July. Staff will evaluate the rest of the department structure and post for another position at a
later date, and will look to add an Apprentice in 2026 if the budget allows.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the posting of a Public Works Maintenance I position immediately.
