MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
FEBRUARY 25, 1998
Morelan asked if it were expensive to fix such connections. The Director
estimated the cost at between $50 and $300 depending on whether or not
the basement was finished.
The Director also anticipated that there are some roof and footin~ drains
connected into the sanitary sewer system. However, at this point he is
proposing to check sump pumps only. At the same time as sump pump
inspections are occurrin~;, the Director is recommending that inside and
outside water meter readings be compared.
The Director pointed out that Little Canada has a fairly high water table,
as a result there may be a lot of sump pumps connected to the sanitary
sewer. Scalze pointed out that everyone in the City is subsidizing the cost
of treatin~ this water. Scalze asked what the follow-up program will be.
The Director proposed another inspection two years after the first
inspection. If reconnections are found, those properties would have a
retroactive fine of $100 per month imposed.
Morelan noted that it appelrs the only benefit to the City of connecting a
sump pump to the sewer is if an outside discharge of this water would
cause public safety problems. The Director replied that this is correct, and
these connections would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Mr. LaValle introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOL UTION NO. 98-2-44 - APPRO vINC THE SUMP PUMP
INSPECTION PROGRAM AS O UTI,INED 73Y THE PUBLIC WORKS
I)IRECTOR AND A UTHOItIZING COMMENCEMENT OF THIS
PROCR,9MA.S WEI,I.
