MINUT~S
CITY COUNCIL
MAY 27, 1998
HOUSE Mayor Fahey announced that Senator John Marty and Representative
DISTRICT 54 Mindy Grie(ing will be holding an open house for residents ofDistrict 54.
The open house will be held on 7une 16'~' from 7 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the
State CapitoL
GILAND~RI Mayor Pahey noted that Mr. Dick Kimmes, the developer of the Gilanderi
ADDITION- Addition plat, has requested that action on this preliminary plat be tabled
PR~LIMINA;RY until the June 24`~' meetin~ of the City Council. Mr. Kimmes is currently
PLAN worlcing o~i the en~ineerin~ issues related to this plat.
Mr. LaVllle introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RE.S'07, UTION NO. 98-5-120 - CONTINUING TFIE PUI3LIC
HEARINCi ON THE GII,ANDERI ADDITION PXELIMINARY PI,AT
IINTIL Tf7E JUNE 24, I998 REGULAR CITY COUNCZL MEETINC
~1S REQUES'TED BYMR. DICKKIMMES
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Scalze.
Ayes (5) LaValle, Scllze, Pedersen, Morelan, Fat~ey.
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
REZONING, Mayor Fahey openetl the public llearin~ to consider tl~e Rezoning from
PRELIMINARY Single-Family Residentill (R-1) to Medium-Family Residential (R-2),
& F1NAL PLAT, Preliminary and Final Piat for Viking ~states, as well as a Variance to
VAR[ANCE - allow encroachment into the rear yard setUack. Fahey noted that the City
VIKING ESTAT~S Planner and the Planning Commission have recommended approval ofthe
Rezoning as well as the Preliminary and Final Plat, but recommended
denia] of the Variance.
Jim Olson, develo~~er of Viking Estates, reported that he is proposing to
construct a four-unit townhome structure on the pro}~erty in question.
Tl~ese tow~~homes would be simila~- to those he ]ias developed at the
intersection of County Road D and County Road B-2 in Vadnais Hei~hts.
Olson requested that the Council consider the variance request which he
estimated to be lbout a 7-foot encroachment into the rear yard setback.
Olson pointed out that the porch for one of the units is proposed to
encroacl~ into this setback, and porches seem to be an amenity that clients
want. Olson notetl that his property abuts an approximately 50-foot
stretch of vaclnt land as well as a parking lot. Therefore, the
encroachment would not impact any neighbors. Olson further reported
that the City's'Public Worlcs Director is requiring a wider utility easement
than the average.
