~L~RIIi~ ~ASSOQ~T~S
TAU(BURTU
Memo

TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Lee Elfering, City Engineer
DATE: February 10, 2010
RE: Little Canada Road Bridge Rail Replacement
Bids were opened for the above referenced project at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday,
February 10, 2010 in accordance with the Advertisement for Bids. The project includes
the replacement of the existing chain link fence with ornamental railing on the Little
Canada Road Bridge over Interstate 35E along with a new surface treatment on the
parapet to eliminate the staining that has occurred. This project was originally bid in
October of 2009, but at that time only one bid was received and it was the
recommendation of staff that the project be rebid. Two (2) bids were received this time
from the following companies:
Corporation Base Bid
Sunram Construction $112,534.12
Global Specialty Contractors $142,024.00
The bidders are listed above from low base bid to high base bid. Based on the bids
received, Sunram Construction is the low bidder. The low bid received appears to be
competitive and the bids have been reviewed for errors and/or omissions. Sunram
Construction has completed retaining wall work within the City as a subcontractor on our
street reconstruction projects and past experience with them reflects that they are a
responsive and responsible bidder.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) is providing some funding for
this project and concurrence of award is required from their office prior to actual award.
Therefore, we would recommend that the City Council authorize award of the project to
Sunram Construction in the amount of $112,534.12 contingent on concurrence from
Mn/DOT.
If you have any questions concerning this information, please call me at (763) 780-0450.
10062 Flanders Court NE -Blaine, MN 55449 - Ph: (763) 780.0450 Fax (763) 780-0452
Memo-027010-CC (Award)
