G~ ' ~ t~F Coy ~ ( -
David Himmelbach
, V1 ~ W ~1 (a 5 t o-1 ~ S ~ 3970 Labore Rd.
Little Canada, MN 55109
y.. ~2«~,i~ i~fct~~ Iln9roa
65t-774-0099
suh~;-~t_slo~,
-~z3 I~~~ ~ ~ ~ I~~ ~ 5 a C ~
Josh Winters
MPIRG
1313 5th St. SE Ste.l i l
Mpls., MN
55414
At the behest of the Metro Council the city of Little Canada asked developer Lauren and Co, to delineate
area wetlands for purpose of future landuse development. Delineated summer of 2007 following nine years
of mild to extreme drought with burning restrictions the wetland area was substantially stnaller than
previously mapped indications. The delineation was done by Mark Iverson of Evergreen.Irrigation, a W[
company not previously accustomed to delineating. I don't know if Mark is a certified delineator.
Delineation was done without use of monitor wells typical]y used for areas of special. interest and concern
of accuracy, when such care is employed the Army Corps of Engineers typically prefers three to five year
minimum survey and monitoring of groundwater.
Site conditions stated in the Corps letter indicate sand from bedrock deposited by spring seep. At one point
core sample suggested 30+" of peat. The spring seep inventoried on the Karst Features Database is one of
fifteen such features in Ramsey County.
Ron Cockrell with the Maplewood Historic Preservation office was on site 11/'OS and identified a large red
granite rock as most likely a "vision quest" native Americari marker used as a sign or travel route marker
dating about 10,000 years old, aue of a very Few found locally. This substantiates authenticity of suspected
artifacts I found in the area,

,Some depletion of area wetland occurred with water and sewer construction summer 'O8, Kohlman Lane
area by removal of groundwater from excavation adjacent to wetland. This resulted in algae pond scum and
dogdays smell early in the summer around the north end of Lake Gecvais, covering of the south part that
drains to Spoon Lake,.most all of Spoon Lake and'?~ of Keller Lake was covered. Wetland should recover
from this although the pond on my property delineated class A managed was down to the muck 10/'OS
from t 8" + standing water 7/'08.
The spring has.been there since before my family built there: in 1951, probably more than 10,000 years. A
spring seep is technically a wetland by definition alone and should be protected as same. It is one of source
headwaters to the St.Paul chain of lakes.
I have included, copy of correspondences to agencies and government units.
. Respectfully, David Himmelbach
_
10
