WIZ o i't c anaaa
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(651) 766 -4029 FAX: (651) 766 -4048
www, ci.little- eanada.mn. us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener Members of City Council
FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: February 2, 2011
RE: Pothole Repair Policy
Potholes are a year -round issue for governments and spring potholes can get very bad.
The Public Works Department tries its best to stay on top of them but it can't always
address every pothole immediately. The League of Minnesota Cities htsurance Trust
recommends that cities have a formal pothole repair policy to manage their respective
pothole repair programs. The policy discusses how potholes are repaired, who does the
repairs, and how complaints are dealt with. While it states that streets are inspected a
minimum of once a year most roads in Little Canada are inspected many more times than
that. in late winter and spring crews are constantly making lists of potholes and filling
them in with cold mix until hot mix becomes available. Cold mix is only a temporary
patch and in some eases only lasts for a day or so. Some streets need attention on a
weekly basis. While that is not always possible, the Public Works Department does its
best to keep holes filled. Also included with the policy is an example of a pothole
patching form.
Staff recommends the City Council formally adopt the Pothole Repair Policy.
1
MAYOR
13111 131esener
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
John (tots
Michael McGraw
Shelly Boss
ADMINIS1RArOR
Joel R.
