I'm not in favor of putting off this trail connection any longer on the 1 out of 4 chance that we might get some funding next year. I see a 75% probability that we won't receive any funding and that the project would get put off another 2 years. We've had two dead end sections of trails in existance for several years already that residents can't use. I would like to see us go ahead with construction this summer as planned. Lee, After looking into the grant programs, I believe the best fit for this project is the Local Trail Connections Program administered through the DNR. You may recall that the City received a $100,000 grant from this program in 2004 ,which was used to build the Waterworks Trail between S. Owasso and Rice Street and the boardwalk connection to Walter Street. I don't know whether that would impact our chances for getting funding for this project,but it seems like we could make a case for this project to be a continuation of the original project. The next round of Trail Connection grant applications will be due March 31,2012,with funds available on July 1,2012. The DNR does not know what funds will be available for next year. It is likely that they will have about $500,000 and that there will be about 30 applications. It is a 50/50 matching grant up to a maximum of $100,000. My guess is that the chances of us getting the grant would be about 25 - 30%. I have copies of the grant description and application forms - let me know if you want me to send you a copy.
