LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
Telephone: (651) 766 -4029 / Fax: (651) 766 -4048
www.ci.little-canada.mn.us
TO:
FROM:
DATE:
RE:
JIM MORELAN, Director
(651) 766-4045
DON BOWMAN, Recreation Supervisor
(651) 766-4041
KATIE McGINNITY, Recreation Supervisor
(651) 766 -4042
DEREK ANDERSON, Park Maintenance Supervisor
(651) 766-4056
MEMORANDUM
Mayor Blesener and Members of the City Council
Jim Morelan, Parks & Recreation Director
September 28, 2011
Demont Rink
The recent community survey shows that residents are in support of using City funds to
re -open the Demont Rink by a 53% to 31% margin.
Since closing the facility last season, 1 have received many questions, comments, and
requests from residents wanting to see this skating rink re -open. While the Demont Rink
is less populated than the Little Canada Road facility, there are many residents on the
west side of the freeway that prefer the Demont facility because of its proximity to their
homes.
The cost to operate the Demont Rink for the 2011/2012 season is $6,500. I estimate the
value of the complex with the building, rink hoards, and lights to be nearly $100,000, a
considerable investment to leave vacant when we have this much demand for its use.
My recommendation would be to re -open the Demont Rink at a slightly reduced schedule
of operation for the 2011/2012 season, closing the warming house one or two weekdays
based on demand and use. A full schedule of ice maintenance (flooding and snow
removal) would still be needed. Therefore, the savings would be realized in not having to
staff the warming house one or two days per week.
If the Council is in agreement with this recommendation, I will meet with the Rink
Superintendent to come up with a schedule. Thank you for your consideration.
