to download the meter readings and will benefit the City long -term by eliminating
manual entry of meter readings.
Staff recommends the Council authorize the purchase of the Springbrook Interface
Module for the new water meter system at a cost of $3500 plus training and project
management fees and annual maintenance fees of $875.
Free Water Promotion
The company that will be performing the meter replacements has a lot of experience with
citywide meter installations. They send out a letter to everyone before they start the
project, and in the letter they encourage people to schedule appointments for the
installations. Appointments make the installer's job easier and help to avoid cold calling.
In an effort to get people to schedule appointments, the installer has held drawings in
other cities for free water for a quarter for those who make appointments.
Staff believes this would be beneficial to the meter replacement project and is
recommending the City conduct a drawing after the project is completed and choosing 6-
10 winners of one free quarter of water use. Details can he worked out regarding who is
eligible for the drawing but it would likely be those who have scheduled an appointment
during the first round of notices. Since it is a reward staff would like to honor those who
have cooperated on the project. The quarter when the free water is given should also be
established. Staff recommends winter quarter 2012. Staff will continue to work with the
installer on this concept if the Council approves it.
6
