515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(657.) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766.4048
www.ci.little-canadann.us
MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
From: Bill Direks, Public Works Superintendent
Date: February 1, 2008
Re: Manhole Covers
MAYOR
13111 13le.sener
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
Barbara Allan
Joni i(eis
Michael Mc(Aaw
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
From 2005 to 2007 the City replaced 400 sanitary sewer manhole covers with over 300 of
them determined to be susceptible to inflow during rainfall and spring melting events.
The program has been very successful as evidenced by the pools of water standing on the
new solid manhole covers rather than spilling into the sewer system through holes in the
covers. The new covers are also much lighter than the old -style covers making it easier
on the maintenance staff when pulling them off and putting them back on.
In the interest of consistency staff would like to finish replacing the manhole covers this
year so that they are all the same with the exception of the covers in newer developments
that are already lighter and without holes. There are approximately 120 covers remaining
that need to be replaced.
Staff recommends that the Council authorize the purchase of 120 additional manhole
covers from Ess Brothers at a price of $85.00 plus tax per cover. That yields a total of
$10,863.00. The old covers will be brought to a scrap yard for money to help offset the
cost of the new covers. Staff has budgeted $12,500 for manhole cover replacement in the
Water and Sewer Capital Replacement Budget.
1
