515 Little Canada Road. Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048
www. ci.little- canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: February 22, 2008
RE: Little Canada Road Tree Trimming Proposals
MAYOR
Bill f- Aesi•ner
COUNCIL
Ride Montour
Barbara Allan
John Kcis
Michael McGraw
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
The trees planted along Little Canada Road need to be pruned to help ensure their continued viability as
boulevard trees. Derek Anderson, parks maintenance supervisor, has obtained two quotes for this work
(copies attached). They are as follows:
S & S Tree Specialists — 110 trees @ 19 each = $2,090.
Precision Tree - 110 trees @ 9 each = $ 990.
A letter from S & S is attached that provides more information on the need and nature of the work to be
undertaken. We want to emphasize that the long, single shoots extending beyond the majority of the
canopy will not be removed due to the negative impact removal would have on the future growth and
development of our trees. (These long shoots have generated some negative comments regarding the
appearance of the trees.)
Time is of the essence is we are to undertake the work before spring. Once it starts warming up and the sap
in the trees starts flowing, it will be too late. If the Council authorizes this work, staff assumes it will be
completed within a week. If we can complete the work soon enough, we will have to hold completion until
next winter.
Staff believes this is a good investment in the maintenance of our boulevard trees and recommends
authorizing Precision Tree to undertake the work as described.
1
