Manufacturers of the 3 main components of fire trucks (engine,
drive train, pump) are guaranteeing replacement parts for 20 years from the date of
manufacture. Many parts may still be available past 20 years, but the fire department
feels that an approximate 20 year replacement schedule should be used to insure a
dependable fleet to meet the future fire protection needs of the City. 1 year was added to
trucks numbered 15 and 17 to create a larger span to ease budgeting problems between
those and truck #14 in 2012,
The scheduled replacement date will cause a committee to be activated approximately 2
years prior to that date to begin the planning process for design and specifications of the
new vehicle,
** Estimated replacement cost - This cost is an estimate using a 6 % increase per year,
based on the vehicle's original purchase price. The 6 % is a rough standard used by the
fire truck industry. The 6 % increase should account for annual inflation, technological
advances, and mandates imposed by the National Fire Protection Association.
* ** This figure was originally $350,000, In November of 2003 we received an estimated
cost of $ 375,000 to replace this pumper. We took that figure and calculated a 6%
increase for the next 3 years.
XXX — This vehicle is basically a pickup truck with some fire related modifications. It
was calculated with a 10 year replacement using 3% inflation.
10
