The City spent $5,000 to obtain this estimate. Xcel indicated that it would run about
$5,000 for each of the remaining segments if we wanted a more thorough analysis.
We budgeted $600,000 for the undergrounding work along Little Canada Road from
Edgerton to Centerville Road. It now appears we are over $800,000. Xcel is putting
together an impact statement if we were to add a surcharge to the electric bills to recover
this cost. We hope to have that by Wednesday's meeting.
Photos are attached of what the power lines look like. While I would love to recommend
burying them from an aesthetic standpoint, I'm afraid the number is too large to justify in
terms of other needs the City has to deal with.
We also discussed street lighting with Xcel. New lights similar to what we have on
Little Canada Road on the west side of the freeway will run about $7,200 each. The
range of cost for poles and fixtures is $6,500 to $7,500 each if installed with an
undergrounding project. This is the Group V program where we pay for the poles and
fixtures on the front end of the project and then we receive a much lower electrical rate
and they maintain the system for 20 years. Banner supports can be added to the poles,
but it would be done outside of Xcel's work. However, there is no sense adding these
types of fixture if we don't bury the power lines.
Your decision and /or direction is needed.
2
