MAYOR
5111 Biesener
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
Barbara Allan
John Reis
Michael McGraw
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600 ADMINISTRATOR
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048 Joel R. Hanson
www.ci.little-canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
DATE: June 19, 2008
TO: Joel Hanson, City Administrator
FROM: Stephen Westerhaus, Building Official
RE: Building Code Adoption
The Minnesota State Building Code has been established as a minimum construction standard
throughout the State of Minnesota including cities, townships, and counties.
The State Building Code was first adopted in 1972 by Minnesota and applied statewide and
superseded any municipality's code. Since then, the code has been amended many times and
now is comprised of over 20 chapters including amendments and several optional provisions.
Our ordinance must be updated from time to time, usually every three years, to reflect the most
current edition of the State Building Code along with related amendments. The building code is
intended to be adopted as a legally enforceable document to safeguard health, safety, property,
and public welfare.
Currently, Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry rulemaking committees are reviewing
the newest versions of the plumbing, mechanical, energy, and conservation codes and we will
have to add those when they become adopted on a state level however a timeline has yet to be
drawn for those rules.
Contact me with any questions
Stephen Westerhaus
1
