allow for future installation of improvements such as wireless access points and
laptop support.
2. The current switch is no longer supported by Cisco.
Failure of the switch would mean that network users could not access file servers,
printers, or the Internet until a replacement could be procured. The switch is a vital place
of network equipment serving all of the City offices, and it would be prudent to replace it
before failure.
Roseville IT requested a quote from Berbee, one of their preferred vendors for equipment
appropriate for Little Canada's needs. The quote includes a Catalyst 3560 48 -port switch
at a cost of $3702.15 and a GE transceiver at a cost of $567.15 for a total of $4269.30.
The quote also specified a SMARTNET board, but the Roseville network engineers did
not feel that item was necessary .
Not included in this quote are sales (or use) tax, estimated at $283.91 (6.65% in Hennepin
County) and shipping costs.
Based on the above, staff recommends Council approval for up to $4650 for the purchase
of a network switch.
2
