RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT FOR <br />RICE STREET BRIDGE DESIGN FUNDING <br />WHEREAS, <br />The current Rice Street Bridge spanning Highway 36 is inadequate to handle traffic <br />volumes for the area and impedes the functionality of this intersection; <br />WHEREAS, <br />Rice Street is a critical thoroughfare in the northeast metro area in moving people <br />between St. Paul and suburban communities; <br />WHEREAS, <br />The current Rice Street Bridge design impedes traffic movement for both business and <br />residential citizens of Northeast Metro Area as well as people accessing businesses, <br />schools, and residential properties in the area of Rice Street and Highway 36; <br />WHEREAS, <br />St. Jude Medical, a global business located in Little Canada, is negatively impacted by <br />the current design of the Rice Street Bridge over Highway 36 due to the limitations it <br />poses for traffic movements between their facilities; <br />WHEREAS, <br />Legislation has been proposed that would allocate $2,000,000 in funding for the redesign <br />of the Rice Street Bridge; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Little Canada <br />that the City supports proposed legislation that would provide funding for the redesign of <br />the Rice Street/Highway 36 Bridge in order to facilitate reconstruction of this important <br />bridge to improve access and traffic safety through this area and to enhance economic <br />development of the area. <br />The foregoing resolution was adopted on the 10 °1 day of January, 2007. <br />Attest: <br />William Blesener, Mayor <br />Joel Hanson, City Administrator <br />3 <br />
