Ranson
www. ci.little- canada. mn. us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: July 2, 2007
RE: Old Kettle River Road Identification Signs Along L.C. Road
The Little Canada Historical Society has requested the City install signs identifying the
Old Kettle River Road that ran where much of Little Canada Road is now. They will
purchase the signs and brackets and City staff will install them at eight locations ranging
from Rice and Little Canada Road to MeMenemy and L.C. Road. A copy of the quote
including the appearance of the sign has been included with this memo. The cost of the
signs and brackets is $704.00. The sign would be black writing on a white background so
that it will stand out from our green street name signs. The City of St. Paul has marked a
few of their historic roads with similar signage. An example is West Seventh St.
downtown. There are "Old Fort Road" signs posted along with the West Seventh St.
signs.
Staff is recommending approval of the installation of up to eight Old Kettle River Road
signs purchased by the Little Canada Historical Society on the condition that the signs do
not interfere with the existing signs and do not adversely impact the current setup of the
signs. An example of adverse impact would be the weight of the new sign causing the
sign tree to bend or tip one way due to excessive weight.
