Memorandum
zl['[RIN6 - ASSOCIATES
TAUt Ma
TO: Little Canada Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Lee Elfering, City Engineer
DATE: December 12, 2007
RE: 2007 Miscellaneous Storm Sewer Improvements
Change Order #1
Background
A major portion of the improvements project was the replacement of an old Corrugated
Metal Pipe (CMP) from the Viking Drive cul -de -sac to the outlet to the east of the cul -de-
sac. The original plan outlined the removal of the failed CMP pipe and replacement with
a HDPE pipe following the same alignment and grade. When the permit was submitted
to the Minnesota Department of Transportation for the work needed within their right -of-
way they indicated that no approval would be granted without modifying the pipe
alignment to minimize the water exit velocities. To accommodate this requirement a
drop structure was added and a permit was received. The addition of the structure and
modification of the pipe grade then required a modification of the horizontal alignment of
the pipe to eliminate conflicts within the Magellan Easement. While approvals were
being obtained from Mn /DOT the sink holes created by the failed pipe worsened
resulting in the need to reset the hydrant at the end of the cul -de -sac.
The remaining items outlined in the attached Change Order were minor extra work items
that were requested of the Contractor due to his close proximity to the area and his
ability to complete the work in a timely manner.
Summary and Recommendations
The attached Change Order outlines the additional work required or requested of the
Contractor that was outside the original contract requirements and bid costs. We have
reviewed the extra charges totaling $6,477.00 and would recommend the City Council
approve Change Order #1 and authorize its payment.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss this issue please feel free to call me at
(763) 780 -0450 ext. 13.
Z: \PROJ \120079E - 2007 Miscellaneous Storm Sewer Imps \0071 \Memo - 121207 -CC (CO 1).doc
10062 Flanders Court NE - Blaine, MN 55449 - (763) 780 -0450 fax (763) 780 -0452
