Hanson
www. ci.tittle- canada. rnn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
FROM: Bill Direks, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: November 21, 2007
RE: Streetlights
The residents of Labore Avenue requested a streetlight last year to be installed at the west
end of the road in the cul -de -sac. It was decided that the streetlight installation could be
coordinated with the Boss Road project in 2007. The location fits our streetlight location
policy but getting a light to that location is proving to be expensive. Labore Avenue
power is served from poles on the back lot lines between Labore and Bryan and Labore
and Maple Lane. That makes getting wire to the street more difficult.
Xcel Energy provided a quote of $1500 to bring overhead lines from the south to the cul-
de -sac and install a light. They also said they could run a line from the north between 29
and 39 Labore and install a light at that location but it is not in the cul -de -sac. The cost
for this installation would be $0 but easements would be required from the homeowners
at 29 and 39 Labore. The installation would also necessitate the removal of at least one
and possibly two or three trees.
Staff decided that overhead lines were not very appealing and decided to have Xcel
provide quotes for underground installation. Xcel responded with quotes of $5712 for the
underground installation between 29 and 39 Labore and $14,875 to run underground
power from Jackson St. to the Labore cul -de -sac. Both bids were thrown out.
Staff met with a representative of Xcel on -site to discuss any other options there might be
to get a streetlight installed at the end of Labore. Xcel provided a quote of $2,612 to run
underground power from the last pole at the west end between Bryan and Labore. An
easement would be required and the City already has one on the new Boss house that
would work for the installation. The light would be in the southeast portion of the cul -de-
sac and Xcel said they could angle the light fixture out over the cul -de -sac. Xcel also
