White Bear Lake opposes tax for Vikings stadium
The White Bear Lake
City Council passed a
largely symbolic resolu-
tion Tuesday saying it
supports a new Minneso-
ta Vikings stadium in
Arden Hills but opposes
using a countywide half -
cent sales tax to fund it.
The cities of North St.
Paul, Shoreview and St.
Paul have already voted in
opposition to the proposed
tax, which could generate
$350 million for the $1.1 bil-
lion stadium plan. The
votes are essentially sym-
bolic because they cannot
block the tax.
On Monday, Maplewood's
council also approved a
revised resolution that
voiced support for a stadi-
um but not a Ramsey
County -only sales tax.
White Bear Lake's coun-
cil voted mutinously both
for the stadium and against
the tax during an evening
meeting Tuesday.
7
The resolution in opposition to the tax
— forwarded to Ramsey County com-
munities by St. Paul Mayor Chris Cole-
man — went nowhere in Vadnais
Heights when Mayor Susan L. Banovetz
brought it up at the council's July 6
meeting, but no one would second it.
Arden Hills, the proposed site of the
stadium, has not voted on the proposed
tax. Falcon Heights's council will take
up the issue tonight, and Roseville plans
to discuss it July 3.8. ,,, Tod Uezner
