Municipal State Aid
Collector or Locals (< 10,000 ADT)
Collector or Locals (> 10,000 ADT)
and Arterials
Street Width (face -to -face
dimension unless noted other)
28 feet (No Parking)
34 feet (Parking one side)
40 feet (Parking both sides)
32 feet (No Parking)
38 feet (Parking one side)
44 feet (Parking both sides)
It has been standard City practice for the last several years to utilize a street width of 28
feet in residential areas with traffic volumes under 1,000 ADT. There have also been
requests for even narrower street sections that have been approved due to existing
conditions.
RECOMMENDATIONS
First and foremost the street network throughout a City must provide for efficient, safe,
and effective movement of traffic. Dependent on the traffic levels and speed of the
roadways a street width can vary. At this time we are providing recommendations on City
street widths for discussion as shown below. It is our recommendation that the
reconstruction of Municipal State Aid (MSA) roadways be completed the required
standards. These options will be discussed at the Monday workshop for future inclusion
in the City ordinances and standards.
Street Width (face -to -face
dimension unless noted other)
New Development
Arterial Street (> 3,000 ADT) 32 feet
Collector Street (1,000 — 3,000 ADT) 28 feet
Subcollector Street (250 —1,000 ADT) 28 feet
Street Widths for Reconstructions
Arterial Street (> 3,000 ADT)
Collector Street (1,000 — 3,000 ADT)
32 feet
28 feet
Subcollector Street (250 — 1,000 ADT) 24 feet (No Parking)
28 feet (Parking)
For estimating Annual Daily Traffic (ADT) volumes we would recommend that the City
include verbiage in their ordinances indicating that for residential volumes 10 trips per
day be used per household to eliminate conflicting volume calculations. Streets that have
traffic volumes under 250 ADT could be reviewed on a case by case basis for street
width determinations. It would be our recommendation that their width be a minimum of
20 feet.
10062 Flanders Court NE — Blaine, MN 55449 — (763) 780 -0450 fax (763) 205 -2341
Z: \PROJ \120000E - Little Canada Genera0Ordinances \Memo - 111716 -CC (Street width).doc
