MEMORANDUM <br />TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of the City Council <br />FROM: Joel Hanson, City Administrator <br />DATE: May 5, 2006 <br />RE: <br />Hearing on Goose Removal Program <br />The City of Little Canada first participated in the goose management program in 1997. Our level of <br />participation has varied from year to year depending on population levels at various locations. In <br />2002, we did not participate. The areas where round -ups have historically occurred over the past <br />several years are: <br />Country Drive & Spruce Street <br />Grand Pre East Apartments <br />Round Lake <br />Pioneer Park <br />Savage Lake <br />St. Jude Medical <br />The following are the numbers associated with the past five years' round -ups: <br />Young Adults Total <br />2005 81 39 120 <br />2004 45 18 63 <br />2003 84 28 112 <br />2002 0 0 0 <br />2001 25 10 35 <br />The City's participation in the goose management program is not universally appreciated. To that end, <br />staff recommended to the Council that we conduct a public hearing on the topic before deciding on <br />participation in 2006. This is due to the comments we periodically receive relating to the lack of <br />awareness of this program, concerns regarding the inhumane treatment of the geese, the cost of the <br />program (total cost of $4,585 in 2005 that is defrayed by contributions from St. Jude Medical) and <br />generally disagreement regarding the need to remove Canadian Geese from areas of the City. <br />Dr. James Cooper, Director of the Canada Goose Program, will be present to provide background on <br />the program and to answer questions regarding it effectiveness relative to other control options. (I <br />have attached a couple of articles that discuss Di: ?.;.per's background and expertise in this arena.) I <br />
