LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117-1600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048
www.ci.little-canada.mn.us
TO:
FROM:
DATE:
RE:
MEMORANDUM
JIM MORELAN, Director
(651) 766 -4045
DON BOWMAN, Program Coordinator
(651) 766 -4041
DEREK ANDERSON, Program Coordinator
(651) 766 -4041
BRAD VOLK, Maintenance Supervisor
(651) 766 -4056
Mayor Blesener and Members of the City Council
Jim Morelan, Parks and Recreation Director
May 18, 2006
Authorize Bid for Park Improvements
Power Line Trail Connection to Walter Street in Maplewood
Nadeau Wildlife Area Overlook
As discussed at the Park & Recreation Commission, Bill Sanders, Park Consultant, has
completed drawings for the connection of the power line trail in the Westwinds area to
Walter Street in Maplewood. The project will consist of approximately 150 feet of trail
in Little Canada and 95 feet of trail in Maplewood. Estimated cost to Little Canada is
$84,000 with Maplewood's cost estimated at $57,000. Sanders is proposing to bid both
cities' trail segments as one project, with each city paying its proportionate share.
Little Canada has some money in the budget for its share of the project; however, the
project cost will exceed the original budget amount given the addition of a boardwalk as
part of this project.
Sanders has also completed drawings for extension of a walking path in Nadeau Wildlife
Park and the addition of a wildlife viewing platform. Estimated cost is $51,000. $7,500
has been included in the budget for the wildlife viewing platform, but with the need for
the sidewalk connection as well as elevation corrections, this project will exceed the
budgeted amount.
The additional monies for these projects would come from the Infrastructure Fund.
It may be necessary to enter into a Joint Powers Agreement with the City of Maplewood
for the power line trail connection. Staff is requesting authorization to bid both projects
as well as authorization for a Joint Powers Agreement with Maplewood. Bids will be
brought back to the Council for review and action.
