Page 17 of 20 <br />dumbwaiter; or the certificate shall be available for public inspection in the office of the building operator. <br />(B) Elevators: In buildings equipped with passenger elevators, at least one elevator shall be maintained in <br />operation at all times when the building is occupied. <br />Exception: Buildings equipped with only one elevator shall be permitted to have the elevator <br />temporarily out of service for testing or servicing. (Ord. 706, 3 -16 -1998) <br />4- 8 -6 -7: DUCT SYSTEMS: <br />(A) General: Duct systems shall be maintained free of all obstructions and shall be capable of providing <br />the required function. (Ord. 706, 3 -16 -1998) <br />4 -8 -7: FIRE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: <br />4- 8 -7 -1: GENERAL: <br />(A) Scope: The provisions of this Section shall govern the minimum conditions and standards for fire <br />safety relating to structures and exterior premises, including fire safety facilities and equipment to be <br />provided. <br />(B) Responsibility: The owner of the premises shall provide and maintain such fire safety facilities and <br />equipment in compliance with these requirements. A person shall not occupy as owner - occupant or <br />permit another person to occupy any premises that do not comply with the requirements of this <br />Section. (Ord. 706, 3 -16 -1998) <br />4 3.. •2: MEANS OF EGRESS: <br />(A) General: A safe, continuous and unobstructed path of travel shall be provided from any point in a <br />building or structure to the public way. <br />(B) Exit Capacity: The capacity of the exits serving a floor shall be sufficient for the occupant load thereof <br />as determined by the building code. <br />(C) Number Of Exits: In nonresidential buildings, every occupied story more than six (6) stories above <br />grade shall be provided with not less than two (2) independent exits. In residential buildings, every <br />story exceeding two (2) stories above grade shall be provided with not less than two (2) independent <br />exits. In stories where more than one exit is required, all occupants shall have access to at least two <br />(2) exits. Every occupied story which is both totally below grade and greater than two thousand <br />(2,000) square feet shall be provided with not less than two (2) independent exits. <br />(D) Arrangement: Exits from dwelling units, rooming units, guest rooms and dormitory units shall not lead <br />through other such units, or through toilet rooms or bathrooms. <br />(E) Exit Signs: All means of egress shall be indicated with approved "Exit" signs where required by the <br />building code. All "Exit" signs shall be maintained visible and all illuminated "Exit" signs shall be <br />illuminated at all times that building is occupied. <br />(F) Corridor Enclosure: All corridors serving an occupant load greater than thirty (30) and the openings <br />therein shall provide an effective barrier to resist the movement of smoke.
